LeBron James was born on 30 December 1984, in Akron, Ohio, the United States as LeBron Raymone James Sr. He was born into a poor Catholic Christian family. LeBron James father is Anthony McClelland, an ex-convict, who ignored his son from birth.
His mother, Gloria Marie James, at the time of his birth she was only 16 years old. Life for the family was often a challenge when James was growing up, as they moved from apartment to apartment in the seedier neighborhoods of Akron while Gloria struggled to find a regular job.
At times Gloria James had to put her son in the care of a foster family give. James was introduced to the game of basketball at the age of nine by his foster father, Frankie Walker.
His outstanding talent was recognized early on and got him a scholarship to the private Catholic St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron. James initially played both basketball and football for The Fighting Irish, but later focused entirely on basketball.

LeBron James was selected by the Cleveland Cavaliers in first place in the 2003 NBA Draft. Before coming to the NBA, LeBron signed a $90 million contract with Nike and another with Upper Deck. He chose number 23, the same one worn by Michael Jordan, whom he considers his idol and a role model.
