Ford Bronco Goes Electric in China with New EV and Plug-In Hybrid Models

The Ford Bronco has been a big hit in the U.S., giving the Jeep Wrangler a real run for its money. Now, Ford is expanding the Bronco lineup overseas, but not in the way you might expect.

Say hello to the Ford Bronco New Energy, a fully electric and plug-in hybrid SUV headed for the Chinese market. Built in partnership with Jiangling Motors, this new Bronco won’t be anything like the rugged gas-powered version Americans know. Instead, it’s designed from the ground up to be electrified, and it could be a glimpse at the Bronco’s global future.

Two Versions: One All-Electric, One Extended-Range

According to new government filings in China, the Bronco New Energy will come in two versions:

  1. Battery-Electric (EV)
    • 105.4-kWh battery
    • 404 miles of range (China CLTC estimate)
    • 271 horsepower
  2. Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (EREV)
    • 43.7-kWh battery + 1.5-liter gas engine
    • 758 miles of total range
    • 241 horsepower

While the pure EV is more powerful and fully electric, the EREV version is aimed at those looking for maximum range without full dependence on charging stations.

Size and Design: Bigger, Heavier, and Built for Adventure

This new electric Bronco isn’t just a copy-paste of the U.S. version with batteries thrown in. The wheelbase (116.1 inches) matches the internal combustion Bronco, but the electric version is nearly eight inches longer overall.

  • Curb weight (EV): 5,800 pounds
  • Curb weight (EREV): 5,535 pounds

Design-wise, it looks more like a beefed-up Bronco Sport, but it still carries off-road vibes, including a rear-mounted spare tire and press photos showing rugged terrain. There’s also a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor, hinting at advanced driver assistance features, something we haven’t seen yet on U.S. Broncos.

Built for China, For Now

These electric Broncos are being built exclusively for the Chinese market, at least for now. Ford hasn’t confirmed any plans to bring them to North America or Europe. Pricing also hasn’t been announced yet, but both models are expected to launch in China later this year.

Final Thoughts: A New Era for the Bronco?

The Bronco New Energy marks a big shift for Ford. It blends adventure-ready styling with next-gen electric technology and signals the brand’s serious commitment to global EV expansion.

Will this electric Bronco eventually make it to the U.S.? That’s unclear. But as EV competition heats up worldwide, especially from Chinese automakers, don’t be surprised if Ford starts thinking about how to bring a version of this battery-powered Bronco stateside.

For now, China is getting the first taste of the electric off-road Bronco, and it’s looking like a bold step forward.
