Porsche is doubling down on electric vehicles — even after a rough year for its first EV, the Taycan.
In 2024, Taycan sales dropped by a staggering 49%, and they’ve continued falling in 2025. But that hasn’t shaken Porsche’s confidence in its EV future. In fact, the company is full steam ahead, especially after a strong start for its all-new electric Macan.

EV Macan Is Crushing It
The second-generation Macan, which is now an electric-only SUV in many markets, has become Porsche’s best-selling model through the first half of 2025. While the original gas-powered Macan is still available outside of Europe, the new EV version is outselling it — a clear sign that Porsche’s EV play might be paying off.

Next Up: The Electric Cayenne
Now, Porsche is getting ready to launch the 2026 Porsche Cayenne Electric, and the brand has big hopes. Since the original gas-powered Cayenne launched in 2002, it’s been one of Porsche’s most profitable vehicles. With this new electric version, they hope to repeat that success.
We got a sneak peek of the near-production prototype recently at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the U.K., where Porsche showcased the Cayenne Electric’s performance. Professional driver Gabriela Jílková was behind the wheel, fresh off a record-setting hill climb at Shelsley Walsh.

Fast, Powerful, and Surprisingly Comfortable
Porsche hasn’t released all the specs yet, but here’s what we know:
- It reportedly goes from 0 to 60 feet in just 1.94 seconds.
- It will be the most powerful Cayenne ever, even more than the current 729-horsepower Turbo E-Hybrid.
- It will be able to tow up to 7,716 pounds.
- It will be slightly larger than the current Cayenne.
The company is also hyping up the Cayenne Electric’s comfort, likely referring to its advanced suspension system. The prototype shown at Goodwood had Porsche Active Ride, which uses adaptive dampers from ZF that can adjust 13 times per second. The result? A smoother, more stable ride — even on twisty roads or at high speeds.
When Can You See It?
The full reveal of the Cayenne Electric will happen later this year at the IAA Mobility Show in Munich, where Porsche says it will also unveil a major new EV innovation. However, that car will still be a prototype. The final production version will be shown at a separate event on the West Coast in late 2025.
Originally, Porsche planned to release the electric Boxster and Cayman (718 EVs) first. Now, the Cayenne EV is coming before those models. The new Boxster and Cayman won’t launch until at least 2026.
What About Gasoline Porsches?
If you’re not ready to go electric just yet, don’t worry — Porsche isn’t ditching gas entirely. The gas and hybrid versions of the Cayenne will remain in production well into the 2030s, and so will the Panamera and 911.
As for the Macan, the original model will be phased out next year. However, Porsche is already working on a new gas-powered crossover coming later this decade. And a larger three-row SUV is also in development, possibly with both electric and gas options.
Final Thoughts
While Taycan sales may have slowed, Porsche is betting that the next wave of electric cars — especially the Cayenne Electric — will win over luxury buyers. With bold promises, cutting-edge performance, and a legacy to protect, the Cayenne EV could be a major turning point in Porsche’s electric journey.
