Mary Steenburgen earned critical acclaim for her roles in “Time After Time” (1979), and “Melvin and Howard” (1980), for which she also received the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture and the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

In addition to her acting career, she co-wrote the song “Glasgow (No Place Like Home)” with Caitlyn Smith for the British musical drama film “Wild Rose” (2018). In 1978, Mary Steenburgen began dating an English actor Malcolm McDowell, whom she met during the shooting of “Time After Time”.

On 29 September 1980, Steenburgen married Malcolm McDowell. They had two children together, a son named Charlie McDowell, who was born on 10 July 1983, is an American film director and screenwriter, and a daughter named Lilly McDowell, who was born on 22 January 1981, is an American actress.

In 1990, Steenburgen and McDowell got divorced. On 7 October 1995, Steenburgen married an American actor Ted Danson, whom she met during the filming of “Pontiac Moon”.
