Andrew Cuomo’s Political Career

In 1993, he started working at the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, initially as one of the assistant secretaries (which roughly corresponds to the Polish deputy minister with the rank of undersecretary of state). In 1997 he became the head of this ministry and chaired it for the entire second term of President Clinton, until January 2001.

After leaving the federal government, in 2002, he applied for the Democrats’ nomination in the New York gubernatorial elections but eventually resigned, and the nomination was won by Carl McCall, whom he later defeated in the election for re-election George Pataki.

Not having the opportunity to support Democrats, Cuomo took part in the elections as a candidate of the tiny Liberal Party of New York and received less than 16,000 votes of more than 4.7 million cast in the state. In 2006, he ran for the position of the state prosecutor general, this time with success.

In early 2009, when Hillary Clinton was forced to relinquish her seat in the United States Senate because he could not be combined with the office of a member of the government (and she entered Barack Obama’s cabinet as secretary of state), Cuomo was named among the most serious candidates for her seat.

According to state law, a temporary senator (in office until the elections shall be appointed by the governor in such situations. Eventually, David Paterson has decided to appoint Kirsten Gillibrand. In September 2009, the Obama administration notified Governor Paterson that Andrew Cuomo would be the preferred candidate for the upcoming election.

Under the influence of these suggestions, as well as due to his own health, Paterson resigned from the start. In May 2010, Cuomo was officially nominated by the Democratic Party, and in November 2010 he defeated Carl Paladino, a Republican associated with the TEA Party environment.

He took office on January 1, 2011, one minute past midnight (under state law the governor’s term begins at the beginning of the year). As the governor of New York, on January 22, 2019, he approved a law allowing abortions even in the ninth month of pregnancy in the case of suspected threats to the health and life of the mother, as well as fetal severe disease, which was met with significant criticism from pro-life activists.

Andrew Cuomo Controversies

Sexual Harassment Allegations

On December 13, 2020, Lindsey Boylan, a former aide for Andrew Cuomo who is a Democratic candidate for Manhattan town president in 2021, alleged “Cuomo sexually harassed me for many years. Many saw it, and watched.” Boylan further alleged that Cuomo “exists without ethics.” “takes advantage of people, including me” and ran a “toxic team environment.”

A spokesperson for the Cuomo administration denied all the accusations. She further elaborated on her accusations in February 2021, claiming Cuomo distracted her to play strip poker with him while on a flight in October 2017 and violently kissed her on the mouth in his Manhattan election working office in 2018.

On February 27, 2021, Charlotte Bennett, an executive assistant and health policy advisor of Cuomo, also accused him of sexual harassment allegations, saying that “he asked her about her sex life and if she had been in sexual relationships with older men.”

She also suggested that “Andrew Cuomo was open to relationships with women as young as 23 years old.” In a statement by Cuomo, he denied making advances to Bennett and acting inappropriately towards her.

COVID-19 Nursing Home Controversy

On March 25, 2020, Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Department of Health issued an advisory demanding the admission of patients to nursing homes who test positive for the coronavirus and barred testing prospective nursing home patients.

This order was repealed on May 10, 2020, after widespread criticism from medical experts. More than 4,500 COVID-19-infected patients have been sent to nursing homes in New York state. More than 6,000 New York state nursing home residents had died of COVID-19 as of June 2020.

On January 28, 2021, an investigation directed by state Attorney General Letitia James concluded that the Cuomo administration undercounted COVID-19-related deaths at nursing homes by as much as 60%.

On February 12, 2021, Melissa DeRosa, a top assistant to Cuomo, said in a call with state Democratic leaders that the Cuomo administration willfully delayed the release of data pertaining to deaths from COVID-19 within nursing homes in fear it would’ve triggered a believable federal investigation by the Department of Justice and given an advantage to political opponents.

Calls to repeal Cuomo’s emergency powers granted amidst the pandemic were launched within the New York State Senate immediately following this report, with 14 Democrats joining the Republican minority in the effort. On February 17, 2021, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. attorney in Brooklyn announced they were investigating the incident.
