Winning a SAG Award is an incredible honor—but it turns out, it’s also a bit of a workout! Several winners at the 2024 SAG Awards on Sunday, February 23, couldn’t help but comment on just how heavy their trophies were while delivering their acceptance speeches.
Stars React to the Weight of Their Trophies
Kieran Culkin, who took home the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for A Real Pain, was quick to point out the heft of the statue.
“Thank you SAG-AFTRA for this incredibly heavy award,” Culkin joked. “I don’t think there’s any way anyone can hold this for 45 seconds.”
Actors from Shōgun—Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada—echoed Culkin’s sentiments when they won for Outstanding Performance in a Drama Series.
“It is very heavy!” exclaimed Sawai, 32, as she exited the stage, trophy in hand. Sanada, 64, even pretended to drop his award as a playful nod to its weight.
Colin Farrell also chimed in on the matter while accepting his award for Outstanding Performance in a Miniseries or Television Movie for The Penguin.
“Jesus, Kieran was right!” Farrell exclaimed as he struggled to hold up his trophy.
How Heavy is a SAG Award?
So, just how much does the SAG Award
According to SAG-AFTRA, the statuette—appropriately named “The Actor”—weighs in at over 12 pounds and stands 16 inches tall. The solid bronze figure, which depicts a nude male holding both a mask of comedy and tragedy, is created by the American Fine Arts Foundry, where a team of 10 craftspeople carefully sculpt, cast, and patina each award using heat and cupric acid.
For comparison:
- SAG Award: 12+ lbs
- Oscar (Academy Award): 8.5 lbs
- Emmy Award: Just over 6 lbs
- Golden Globe: Just under 8 lbs
It takes about three to four months to produce all the SAG statuettes for the ceremony each year, and since the first SAG Awards in 1995, a total of 1,233 individually numbered trophies have been awarded.
A Night of Celebrating Film and TV
The SAG Awards celebrate the best performances in both film and television. This year, top contenders included films such as Emilia Pérez, Anora, Wicked, and A Complete Unknown, while the TV categories were led by Shōgun, The Penguin, The Diplomat, Nobody Wants This, and Baby Reindeer.
While the winners walked away with well-earned recognition, they also left with an unexpected arm workout!
