She completes her high school education at Cass Technical High School in Detroit, Michigan. After completing high school she went to Oakland University in Rochester, United States. Later, she attended the New England Conservatory of Music a private music school in Boston, Massachusetts.
In 1987, Carter returned to the U.S. and first came into the spotlight as the violinist for the all-female pop-jazz quintet Straight Ahead. on September 5, 2004, Regina Carter married a popular American drummer Alvester Garnett in Detroit, Michigan.
