Rahul Gandhi is an Indian politician and a member of the Indian Parliament from the Indian National Congress party, representing the constituency of Wayanad, in Kerala state in the 17th Lok Sabha.
He previously represented the constituency of Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, India. Son of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and former President of the Congress party Sonia Gandhi, he is the heir of the Nehru-Gandhi family.
He also served as head of the Youth Congress and the National Union of Students and as vice president of the party. Despite the surname “Gandhi”, he is not related to the greatest Indian national hero, Mahatma Gandhi.
In 2014, Rahul Gandhi was the main official candidate for the post of prime minister in the general elections of the Congress party but he lost the election to Narendra Modi from the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Rahul Gandhi Biography
Rahul Gandhi was born on 19 June 1970, in New Delhi, India, as the first of the two children of Rajiv Gandhi former Prime Minister of India, and Italian descent Sonia Gandhi formerly known as née Maino, she was the current President of the Indian National Congress.
Rahul Gandhi belongs to a family with a long political tradition, being the great-grandson of the first Prime Minister of independent India Jawaharlal Nehru, and grandson of the former first women Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi.
When he was only 14 years old, his grandmother Indira Gandhi was murdered by her own security guard. In 1991, Rajiv Gandhi was killed by terrorists from The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) organization, during an election rally, after which his widow Sonia Gandhi retired from active political life.

Rahul Gandhi initially attended St. Columbia School in New Delhi, and then from 1981 to 1983 to The Don School in Dehradun, from which his mother also graduated. From 1983, Rahul and his sister, Priyanka were homeschooled for security reasons. In 1989, he studied at St. Stephen College in Delhi.
In the years 1990 – 1993, he studied at Harvard University in the USA but did not graduate. For security reasons, he was transferred to Rollins College, Florida, where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in 1994.

In March 2004, Rahul Gandhi announced his entry into politics by announcing that he would contest the May 2004 elections. Rahul Gandhi ran and won his first elections in 2004, in the constituency of Amethi previously occupied by his father and then his mother.
In 2006, together with her sister Priyanka, they oversaw Sonia Gandhi’s campaign in Rae Bareilly’s constituency. In 2007, Rahul Gandhi was appointed Secretary-General of the Indian National Congress and Chairman of the Indian Youth Congress, the party’s youth organization.
Since that time, he has often been seen as a potential candidate for prime minister. In 2012, he oversaw the Congressional campaign in local elections in Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state and where the party has had low scores for several years. Congress wins 28 seats, 6 more than in previous elections, but fails to compete with the state’s major parties.
On November 16, 2012, Rahul Gandhi became chairman of the Congress Coordinating Committee for the 2014 elections. On Jan. 19, 2013, he became vice-president of Congress.
On 16 December 2017, he took the presidency in place of his mother Sonia Gandhi, who held this position for 19 years. During the campaign leading up to the 2019 legislative elections, he was the target of Islamophobic and xenophobic attacks.
He is presented by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as a Muslim because a photograph showed him as a child praying in a mosque.
BJP Former chairman Amit Shah also claimed he was running in a predominantly Muslim constituency (which was wrong), which he compared to Pakistan; he also explained that when he saw the processions of his opponent’s supporters he could not tell if the action was taking place “in India or in Pakistan”.
On July 3, 2019, Rahul Gandhi published a four-page letter on Twitter to formalize his resignation from the presidency of the Congress Party, just over a month after the humiliation suffered by his camp in the legislative elections. His term of office only lasted a year and a half.
