Amitabh Bachchan Biography

Amitabh Bachchan was born on 11 October 1942 in Prayagraj, United Provinces, British India (present-day Uttar Pradesh, India), into an Awadhi Hindu Kayastha family. His father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, was a famous Hindi poet, and his mother social activist Teji Bachchan, was from Punjab.

Bachchan was initially called “Inquilaab Srivastava” which was inspired by the phrase “Inquilab Zindabad” (Long live the revolution) used during the Indian independence struggle. He studied at Boys’ High School in Prayagraj and later graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Sherwood College, Nainital.

He later graduated with a Bachelor of Science from the Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi. Bachchan then applied for a role as a newsreader in a radio station, and then took up a business executive position in Bird & Company in Kolkata.

Amitabh Bachchan’s wife is Jaya Bhaduri, they both married in 1973, and the couple together has two children. Amitabh Bachchan’s daughter’s name is Shweta Bachchan-Nanda and his son’s name is Abhishek Bachchan.

Acting Career

Amitabh Bachchan’s first movie is Saat Hindustani which was released in 1969, directed by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, and featuring Utpal Dutt, Anwar Ali, Madhavan Nair, and Jalal Agha. The movie was not a financial success, but Bachchan did win his first National Film Award.

Followed by the movie Anand (1971) in which Bachchan worked with the then-popular artist Rajesh Khanna. Bachchan’s role as a doctor was also praised by critics and he won the Best Supporting Actor award.

Two years later, Amitabh Bachchan played an angry young man role in the Zanjeer movie. He returned to the same role in 1975 in Deewaar, under the direction of Yash Chopra. He was then at the height of his fame and remained there for many years.

During this period, he was given the nickname “Angry Young Man” because of the many rebellious roles he played. In 1975 Sholay film was released and becomes India’s highest-earning film, at that time. Bachchan earned heights of superstardom from Sholay.

In 1982, during the shooting of a fighting scene with co-actor Puneet Issar for coolie, Bachchan suffered a near-fatal intestinal injury. In 2000, Bachchan hosted the game show, Kaun Banega Crorepati, the Indian version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?”

Bachchan was a calm, confident presenter and the show became a success. It was taken over by Shah Rukh Khan in 2007 and continued.

Political Career

In 1984, Amitabh went into politics to help his family’s friend, Rajiv Gandhi. He competed with the well-known politician HN Bahuguna and won by a wide margin (68.2% of the electorate).

His political career, however, was short-lived and ended at three years, due to a matter related to the Bofors scandal. After a judicial process, Bachchan was found not guilty.

But later, he left the Gandhi family and after the resignation of Rajiv Gandhi, Bachchan entered a crisis due to the economic losses of the Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Ltd.
